Earlier, the Airline Reservation Systems (ARS) used to be standalone
systems. Each airline had its own system, disconnected from other airlines or
ticket agents, and usable only by a designated number of airline employees.
Travel agents in the 1970s pushed for access to the airlines' systems. Today, air
travel information is linked, stored, and retrieved by a network of Computer
Reservations Systems (CRS), accessible by multiple airlines and travel agents. The
global distribution system (GDS) makes for an even larger web of airline
information, not only merging the buying and selling of tickets for multiple
airlines, but also making the systems accessible to consumers directly. GDS
portals and gateways on the Web allow consumers to purchase tickets directly,
select seats, and even book hotels and rental cars. Airline Reservation System
(ARS) in conjunction with Global Distribution System (GDS) has led to ease of
airline ticketing, flight scheduling and also provided a means for customers to
access and book flights from their homes. It has also increased the speed with
which information about customers are retrieved and handled for flight
scheduling tasks.
Airline Reservation System (ARS) is a computerized system used to store
and retrieve information and conduct transactions related to air travel. The
systems was originally designed and operated by airlines, but were later extended
for the use of travel agencies. Major ARS operations that book and sell tickets for
multiple airlines are known as Global Distribution Systems (GDS). Airlines have
divested most of their direct holdings to dedicated GDS companies, who make
their systems accessible to consumers through Internet gateways. Modern GDSes
typically allow users to book hotel rooms and rental cars as well as airline tickets.

Scope of the System:

This Project is not only restricted to Computer Reservation Systems (ARSes), but
also other systems dedicated to the optimal performance in the airline industry;
airline agencies and their customers inclusive. The outcome of this study will
provide a basis for developing the appropriate approach to the problems
associated with air travelling operations in relation to Airline Reservation
Systems. This presentation will be beneficial to all those who make use of Airline
Reservation Systems (ATRSs), flight operators, air travelling operators, travel
agents and airline agencies.
The project is aimed at exposing the relevance and importance of Airline
Reservation Systems (ARS). It is projected towards enhancing the relationship
between customers and airline agencies through the use of ARSs, thereby easing
the flight ticketing and selling process and all air traveling operations.

Drawbacks of the existing system:

The Drawbacks of the existing system can be categorised as that of manual
system and a fully automated system.
Manual system: The system is very time consuming and lazy. This system is more
prone to errors and sometimes the approach to various problems is unstructured.
Automated system: With the advent of latest technology if we do not update our
system then our business result in losses gradually with time. The automated
systems contain the tools of latest trend i.e. computers printers, fax, Internet etc.
The systems with this technology are very fast, accurate and user-friendly. But
these systems cannot be trusted in the case of security of the data and a
supervisor is always required to check the software for version updates and
maintenance. But those systems need to be updated on a regular basis so as to
maintain the integrity.

Limitations of the new System to be implemented:

Even though the aim of the Developing team is to develop a software that
is easy to use and user friendly in nature but the level of abstraction can only be
maintained up to a certain extent and eventually properly trained user is
recommended over a naïve one administer the software.
The Software may have to undergo rigorous testing before the actual
implementation because the scale on which it has to be implemented is vast and
regular updates of the software will be available to reduce the possibility of the
existence of bugs in the system.
Compatibility issues may arise in the system regarding its functional
behavior on various platforms of operating system and the developing team will
be working on the software to keep it stable on every OS platform possible.
The database storage and retrieval shall be managed by either Microsoft
access or Oracle 8 database management softwares depending on their
compatibility and ease of use with keeping the features and need of the system in
mind. The database may still have issues persisting like redundancy of data which
will be addressed by the developing team in the later versions of the software.

Airline reservation systems java project were introduced for the simple standalone systems to control flight inventory, maintain flight schedules, seat assignments and aircraft loading.
This projects main idea is to implement a automated system which can reduce manual errors using airline reservation process and make it convenient for the customers to book the flights as when they require such that they can utilize this software to make reservations, modify reservations or cancel a particular reservation. The name of the software is “AIRLINE RESERVATION SYSTEM”.
The system is complete software for Airline Reservation System, which is more efficient, reliable, faster and accurate for processing.There are few projects on airline reservation system, developed under different platforms with different features.Combining all these features into single project will be a good practice.

Travel agencies make extensive use of airline reservation systems (ARS) to book flights and reserve seats for passengers. Web users are able to employ online and web-based reservation systems to perform this task on their own. All these systems have in common that they leverage database systems to cope with the enormous flood of airline data. An ARS database system handles all information relating to the operations of the airline industry.
The task of this project is to take the role of an application developer and programmer, study and analyze available ARS and design and implement parts of their functionality with an emphasis on the airline reservation component. The project extends over the whole semester, is subdivided into several phases, and is performed by teams of two students. The airline reservstion system that has to be used is the C Program.


The Flight Details

It includes the originating flight terminal and destination terminal, along with stops in between, number of seats booked/available seats between two destination etc.

Customer Description

It includes customer code, name, address and phone number. This information may be used for keeping the records of customer for any emergency or for any other kind of information

Reservation Description

It includes customer code number, flight number, date of booking, date of traveling, (You may assume any other fild/relation, if needed).


In the first phase, your task as an application developer and programmer is to identify the main data management needs and the user functionality of an ARS. You have to ask yourself questions like
What are the main functions that the program should provide? Examples are the possibility to find out which airlines offer flights from location A to B, which airlines still have seats, and so on.
How do the different functions work together? For example, one can only make a flight reservation if there are enough seats available for that flight.
Which data are needed to support the functions identified before? Examples are data about airports, flights, flight legs, fares, seat reservations, and so on.


Based on the requirements analysis of phase 1, the second phase is to describe the overall conceptual design and solution approach of your ARS system. This incorporates the two aspects of user interface design and program design.
As for the user interface design, the task is to the promised functionality of the whole system to the user at the user interface. You should give a clear description about the flows of action the user can expect. It starts with the entry or welcome page and spreads out into a number of successive pages that are appropriately linked with each other.
As for the conceptual database design, you should identify the important loops, functions.
Note that the emphasis is not on producing a high gloss pamphlet with nice pictures. Please give an overview and introduction of your ideas first before you describe the user interface design and then the conceptual design.
Please also note that it is not the task of this phase to determine the database schema of your solution.

Future Scope

A lot can be done to improve the present system, what I have implemented is only the basic design and functionality. But Airline Reservation is a vast idea, and there would be a lot of constraints, functionalities, validation issues and a lot of other things involved. The program can be improved to make it more user-friendly and providing a whole lot of options for convenient use .But, considering the time constraints and because I am just in the learning stage, I could implement only the basic functionality.

The web application which deals with the easy online reservation of flights with high security end is known as ”AIRLINE RESERVATION SYSTEM‟. This Project provides solution regarding the airline reservation problems of users. User can easily check availability of flights & if flight is available , then he/she can get reservation. By the use of Internet the user can save so much time for his reservation.


A Person come to reserve a ticket
He gives his full details.
In customer form those details were written.
Then computer check the date what date the person reserved.
Date wise it check the flights .
If the flight is flying that day .
Then System justify the specific flight id.
It check it’s seat class.
If seat is empty, then system reserve the seat.
Then ticket is generated.
The ticket is confirmed.


The Central objective of ARS is to provide Online facility for reservation of flight. In previous system ( i.e Manual System ) , person has to go to the Airport for booking of flights, enquiry etc. This was fully time consuming, expensive etc. Through this System, person can get reservation anywhere at any time.


The purpose of this plan is to define the “Customer Relationship Management” Software Quality Assurance (SQA) organization, SQA tasks and responsibilities; provide reference documents and guidelines to perform the SQA activities; provide the standards, practices and conventions used in carrying out SQA activities; and provide the tools, techniques, and methodologies to support SQA activities, and SQA reporting.


The scope of this document is to outline all procedures, techniques and tools to be used for Quality Assurance of this project. This plan:
Identifies the SQA responsibilities of the project developer and the SQA consultant
Lists the activities, processes, and work products that the SQA consultant will review and audit
Identifies the SQA work products


In addition to this document, the essential documentation will include:
The Software Requirements Specification (SRS), which
Prescribes each of the essential requirements of the software
Objectively verifies achievement of each requirement by a prescribed method.
Facilitates traceability of requirements specification to product delivery.
Gives estimates of the cost/effort for developing the product including a project plan.
The Software Design Document (SDD)
Depicts how the software will be structured
Describes the components and sub-components of the software design, including various packages and frameworks, if any.
Gives an object model the essential classes that would make up the product.
Gives a sample interaction diagram, showing the key interactions in the application.

User Interface Requirements

The user of the proposed system requires that the developed software should be user friendly, have security access, and ensure the privacy of the administrator and produce results in timely manner. The users are not frequently exposed to the on-line hotel management, so the system interface to the user must be simple and understandable. The web pages must be user-friendly and must be in an easy-to-use style. The user must be able to easily switch among various I/O screens. The product is well designed so that it can be used easily by layman and also the users who are novices to the system.

An airline reservation system (ARS) is part of so-called passenger service systems (PSS), which are applications that support direct contact with the passenger.
ARS eventually evolved into the computer reservation system (CRS). A computer reservation system is used for reservations of a particular airline and interfaces with a Global Distribution System (GDS) that supports travel agencies and other distribution channels in formulating reservations for most Main airlines in a single system.
The airline reservation system includes airline schedules, fares, passenger bookings and ticket registrations. The direct distribution of an airline operates within its own reservation system, as well as pushing the information to the GDS. The second type of direct distribution channels are consumers using the Internet or mobile applications to make their own reservations. Travel agencies and other indirect distribution channels access the same GDS as those accessed by airline reservation systems and all messages are transmitted by a standardised messaging system that operates with two types of messages that transmit in the HLN network of SITA. These types of messaging are called Type A [normally EDIFACT format] for real-time interactive communication and Type B [TTY] for information and type of message reservation. The standards of message construction established by IATA and ICAO are global and apply to more than air transport. Since airline reservation systems are critical business applications, and are functionally quite complex, the operation of an internal airline reservation system is relatively expensive.
Prior to deregulation, airlines had their own reservation systems with the travel agencies that subscribed to them. Today, GDSs are run by independent companies with airlines and travel agencies as their main subscribers.
As of February 2009, there are only four GDS vendors in the market: Amadeus, Travel port (which operates the Apollo, World span and Galileo systems), Saber and Shares. There is an important Regional GDS, Abacus, which serves the Asian market and several regional players serving individual countries, including Travelsky (China), Infini and Axess (both from Japan) and Topas (South Korea). Of these, Infini is housed inside the Saber complex, Axess is in the process of moving into a partition within the World span complex, and Topas agencies will emigrate at Amadeus.
Reserve systems can accommodate "no-frills" airlines and "hybrid" airlines that use e-ticketing as well as tickets to accommodate code shares and interlines.
In addition to these "standardised" GDSs, some airlines have proprietary versions that they use to run their flight operations. Some examples are the Deltamatic OSS system and EDS SHARES. SITA Reservations remains the largest multi-host airline reservation system, with more than 100 airlines currently managing the inventory.
