A sea shell or shell, also known simply as a shell, is a hard and protective outer layer created by an animal that lives in the sea. The shell is part of the animal's body. Empty seashells are often found washed up on beaches by beachcombers. The shells are empty because the animal has died and the soft parts have been eaten by another animal or have been able.

The term shell generally refers to the exoskeleton of an invertebrate (an animal without a backbone), and is typically composed of calcium carbonate or chitin. Most of the shells found on the beaches are the shells of marine mollusks, in part because these shells are usually made of calcium carbonate, and withstand better than the chitin shells.

Apart from the shells of molluscs, other shells that can be found on the beaches are the barnacles, horseshoe crabs and brachiopods. Annelid marine worms in the Serpulidae family create shells that are pipes made of calcium carbonate cemented onto other surfaces. Shells of sea urchins are called proofs, and moulting shells of crabs and lobsters are called exuvias. Although most marine shells are external, some cephalopods have internal shells.

Sea shells have been used by humans for different purposes throughout history and prehistory. However, sea shells are not the only type of shells; In various habitats, there are shells of freshwater animals such as freshwater mussels and freshwater snails, and shells of terrestrial snails.
