PROCEDURE TO INVEST IN MUTUAL FUNDS

Concept of Mutual Funds

A Mutual Fund is a trust that pools the savings of a number of investors who share a common financial goal. The money thus collected is then invested in capital market instruments such as shares, debentures and other securities. The income earned through these investments and the capital appreciations realized are shared by its unit holders in proportion to the number of units owned by them. Thus a Mutual Fund is the most suitable investment for the common man as it offers an opportunity to invest in a diversified, professionally managed basket of securities at a relatively low cost. The flow chart below describes broadly the working of a mutual fund:

SIP is a method of investing a fixed sum, regularly, in a mutual fund scheme. SIP allows you to buy units on a certain date each month, so that one can implement a savings plan for themselves. The biggest advantage of SIP is that it does not take time to market. At the time of the market, one can lose the biggest rally and may stay out while the markets were doing well or may enter at a wrong time when the valuation have peaked or the markets are about to decline. Instead of market time, investing each month will ensure that one is invested in the high and low, and make the most of an opportunity that could be difficult to predict in advance.

An investor can invest a predetermined fixed amount in an outline every month or quarterly, depending on their convenience through post-dated checks or through the ECS (Self-Debit) facility. Investors must complete an application form and SIP mandate form in which they must indicate their choice for the SIP date (in which the amount will be invested). Subsequent SIPs will be automatically loaded via a given permanent instruction or postdated checks. Forms and checks may be sent to the Investor Service Center / Investor Service Center or nearest Registrar / Transfer Agent service center. The amount is invested at the Net Asset Value (NAV) of the closing date of the check.
